I use a self-built kit made up out of 5-ply maple shells (kick drum 7-ply), with a finish I call "Combustion Residue Satin Oil". I use S-Hoops on all my drums.
I mix and match the drums and cymbals to fit the various gigs I do. But the basic setup is as follows:
- 22"x18" kick
- 10"x8" tom*
- 12"x10" tom*
- 14"x14" floor tom
- 16"x16" floor tom
- snare (varies a lot, see below)
*very common is a setup with only one tomtom (either 10" or 12")
Sabian cymbals: 14" HHX Stage Hats or HHX Groove Hats, 21" HHX Dry Ride, 18" HHXtreme Crash, 18" AA Medium Thin Crash, 19" AA Medium Thin Crash, 18" HHX Chinese.
I'm always moving cymbals around. Some other cymbals I might use instead of some of the ones listed above: 21" HHX Groove Ride, 18" HHX Studio Crash (2x), 18" HHXtreme Crash (a 2nd one), 19" HHX Studio Crash, 12" HHX Splash.
Snares:
- Self-built 13"x7" snare. 10-ply maple shell,
English Chestnut finish
- Ahead 14" x 6" black nickel over brass snare
- Self-built 14"x5.5" snare. 10-ply maple shell,
silver glass glitter finish
- Self-customized snare based on an old
14"x6.5" brass Tama shell
- Tama 14"x5.5" Starclassic birch snare,
Indigo Blue finish
- Tama 12"x3" hammered steel shell piccolo
Heads:
REMO drum heads: Coated CS Reversed Black Dot on snare top, Ambassador Snare (Hazy) on snare bottom, Coated Ambassadors (sometimes Clear Emperors) on tom tops, Clear Ambassadors on bottoms, PowerStroke 3 on kick.
Sticks:
Vic Virth SDAV model. 5A's for lighter gigs. Assorted brushes, mallets and rods by Vic Firth.
